Joana Monteiro
Joana Monteiro is a public policy professor at FGV/EBAPE and conducts quantitative research on the impacts of security policies, crime analysis, and the structure of violent criminal groups, aiming to qualify public issues and discuss new institutional arrangements that can enhance the effectiveness of public actions. She holds a Ph.D. and Master’s degree in Economics from PUC-Rio and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UFRJ. She was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago (2023) and a visiting researcher at Columbia University (2021-2022) and Harvard University (2009-2012). She worked for six years in trusted positions in the government of the state of Rio de Janeiro as the Director-President of the Institute of Public Security (2015-2018) and as the coordinator of the Research Center of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rio de Janeiro (2019-2020).
